LG chem finds a way to solve Chevrolet Bolt EV battery problems
Due to a fire caused by the battery in August, General Motors (GM) terminated the production of the Chevrolet Bolt EV.
LG acknowledged that the underlying cause of the battery fire was a manufacturing defect. If the battery anode is broken during the assembly process, and one of the battery separators is also wrinkled, the battery may cause a fire hazard.
Greg Less, director of battery testing technology at the University of Michigan, spoke in an interview with "Design News": "Due to the production machine, in the battery manufacturing process, something is stuck in a certain link of the production line. The anode broke and the diaphragm wrinkled."
According to Less, the battery can accept one of these errors, but it cannot accept multiple errors. For example, if the anode of the battery is broken or the separator of the battery is wrinkled, the battery will not cause a fire. If these two problems occur at the same time, it may cause a fire.
Now, LG battery plants in Holland and Hazel Park, Michigan have resumed production. In fact, the battery factory has increased production in order to provide dealers with replacement car battery modules that have already been sold.
Doug Parks, GM's vice president of global product development, procurement and supply chain said: "Resuming battery production is only the first step. In the future, we will continue to actively cooperate with LG to obtain more battery supplies. In addition, we believe that the new advanced diagnostic software will provide more convenience to our customers."
According to General Motors, the software will be installed at Chevrolet dealers within 60 days to increase vehicle charging parameters. In addition, the driver will be explained.
This diagnostic software will be designed to detect specific abnormal conditions, or to indicate battery damage by monitoring battery performance. The software will remind customers of any abnormalities and give priority to the replacement of damaged battery modules. After the diagnosis is completed, the goal is to return to a 100% state of charge.
Problems with LG batteries or GM batteries should not be regarded as an inevitable phenomenon of electric vehicle battery problems. On the contrary, every problem encountered during the development of lithium-ion batteries will be checked and repaired in the future.
Doug Parks pointed out that although lithium batteries have some compelling problems, as battery technology matures, these problems become less and less. We have not encountered a laptop battery problem for some time. This is a learning process. "
