Data released by True Lithium Research shows that the power battery industry is becoming more and more concentrated

Data released by True Lithium Research shows that the concentration of the power battery industry is getting higher and higher, some manufacturers fall out of the top 20 rankings, and the market reshuffle is intensified. Among them, CATL’s power lithium battery installed capacity in the first quarter accounted for half of the country, far surpassing the second and third-ranked BYD (002594, SZ) and Guoxuan Hi-Tech (002074, SZ). The installed capacity data in March showed that the top five companies accounted for 84.78%. The top five companies accounted for less than 76% in each month of last year, and accounted for more than 78% in the first three months of this year. The lithium battery industry market is concentrated. The degree is getting higher and higher.

On April 23, data released by True Lithium Research showed that the concentration of the power battery industry is getting higher and higher, with some manufacturers falling out of the top 20 rankings, and the market shuffling has intensified. Among them, CATL's installed power lithium battery capacity in the first quarter accounted for half of the country, far exceeding the second and third-ranked BYD (002594, SZ) and Guoxuan High-tech (002074, SZ). The installed capacity data in March showed that the top five companies accounted for 84.78%. The top five companies accounted for less than 76% in each month of last year, and accounted for more than 78% in the first three months of this year. The lithium battery industry market is concentrated. The degree is getting higher and higher.

It is worth noting that BYD, the former king of power batteries, in order to cope with the fierce competition in power batteries, has moved the production of power batteries from self-use to open to the outside world. At present, BYD’s batteries have begun to be installed in other car companies. The relevant staff of BYD told the "Daily Business News" reporter that in the future, not only lithium iron phosphate batteries will be sold, but ternary lithium batteries will also be supplied to the outside world.

Some manufacturers have fallen out of the top 20 rankings

Real lithium research data shows that in March this year, a total of 57 auto companies across the country achieved 2.19GWh of installed capacity.

From the perspective of battery supplier lithium battery installations, CATL ranked first with 1.1GWh installed capacity, accounting for 50.33%. In March last year, its installed capacity was only 258.48MWh, a year-on-year increase of more than three times. BYD ranked second in installed capacity of 411.90MWh, accounting for 18.83%; Guoxuan Hi-Tech (18.520,0.52,2.89%) ranked third with 193.64MWh, with a market share of 8.85%.

From the perspective of battery types supplied by battery manufacturers, NCM (nickel cobalt manganese) ternary batteries occupy a dominant position, followed by lithium iron phosphate batteries. Among the top 20 battery suppliers for lithium battery installations in March, 17 supplied NCM ternary batteries, 8 supplied lithium iron phosphate batteries, 1 supplied lithium manganate batteries, and no manufacturer provided lithium titanate batteries. The main supplier of lithium titanate last year was Zhuhai Yinlong invested by Dong Mingzhu.

The supply of lithium iron phosphate batteries is mainly concentrated in Ningde Times and Guoxuan High-Tech. These two companies together account for nearly 90% of the total installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries. The total installed capacity of NCM ternary batteries is mainly provided by CATL and BYD, and the two companies together account for more than 70%. The installed capacity of lithium manganate batteries is relatively small, and the main supplier is Weihong Power. In March, the installed capacity was 8.68MWh, accounting for 80% of the total installed capacity of lithium manganate batteries.

Zhang Hui, a research analyst at True Lithium, believes that after the Spring Festival in March, all enterprises have resumed normal production, and the installed capacity has increased significantly compared with February. In addition, the implementation of the national subsidy policy has also given enterprises reassurance, and the installed capacity of lithium batteries has grown benign. .

It is worth noting that the power battery industry is becoming more and more concentrated. The installed capacity of new energy vehicles in the first quarter was 4.54GWh, a year-on-year increase of 182.67%. The top three companies have accounted for more than 70% of the market share. In the same period last year, the top three companies accounted for just over half.

Since last year, competition among power battery companies has intensified, and the ranking of the top 20 companies with installed capacity has also changed significantly, and some companies have even dropped out of the rankings. In the whole year of last year, the holding company Watermar of Kenrui Woneng (4.210, 0.20, 4.99%) ranked third in terms of installed capacity, and in March of this year it has disappeared from the top 20 companies.

"squeeze at both ends" to become a dominant family

Mo Ke, the chief analyst of True Lithium Research, believes that this year's market is characterized by a dominance, and the reshuffle has intensified. He said that last year's distinguishing feature was the "squeezing at both ends"-CATL (Ningde Times New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.) has a rapid increase in market share, and the overall market share outside the top 20 has also increased, while 2-19 manufacturers have declined. The top 20 battery manufacturers have a combined installed market share of 86.02%.

However, the market share of the top five power battery companies in the first quarter of this year has exceeded 80%, and the market share of the top 20 companies has exceeded 97%. Last year, the total market share of other battery manufacturers outside the top 20 reached 13.98%, and they only shared less than 3% of the market share in the first quarter of this year.

The most obvious thing is that the continuous growth of market share in the CATL era has squeezed other companies. Take BYD as an example. Although its battery business predates the Ningde era, its closed-loop supply model allowed the latter to quickly occupy the market and was surpassed by the Ningde era in 2017.

The Ningde era lowered the price of power batteries to seize the market last year, causing the average sales price of power battery systems to drop by 30% year-on-year, the largest decline in the past three years. At that time, CATL believed that the decline in average sales price was mainly due to the rapid increase in power battery production capacity in recent years and the adjustment of new energy vehicle subsidy policies.

In response to this fierce market competition, BYD's closed-loop power battery supply chain system has been gradually opened up, and BYD has given out a timetable for the independent listing of power batteries for the first time. On March 31, Shen Xi, deputy general manager of BYD's lithium battery business unit, stated at the 2018 Pearl River Delta Future Automobile Supply Chain Innovation Forum that BYD is doing the divestiture of the power battery business, and it is expected that the split will be completed by the end of 2018 or early 2019. From 2022 to 2023, BYD's power battery company will be listed independently.

Moreover, BYD’s power battery export business has already started. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology announced on April 13 that a pure electric van and a pure electric truck chassis of Dongfeng Motor (4.520, 0.06, 1.35%) are equipped with lithium iron phosphate batteries produced by BYD. Among the 15 pure electric vans and 19 pure electric truck chassis of Dongfeng Motor, there is one battery provided by BYD.

The relevant staff of BYD told the "Daily Business News" reporter that in the future, not only lithium iron phosphate batteries will be sold, but ternary lithium batteries will also be supplied to the outside world. However, the staff member said that the specific progress of BYD's foreign cooperation is still unclear.
