Panasonic's heterojunction solar cells have a silicon heterojunction structure with a crystalline silicon substrate and an amorphous silicon layer. The high passivation ability of the heterojunction cell can compensate for the defects that appear on the surface of the silicon wafer, such as microcracks.

  Since the 1980s, Panasonic has been exploring the possibility of heterojunction batteries. Recent advances in production costs and a series of record performance yields have attracted attention to this technology. According to reports, the production of heterojunction cells and modules cannot be performed at temperatures below 180°C. The production of heterojunction cells and modules, which are common in silicon wafer cells and three-bus bar connection technology, has become a major obstacle to the development of this technology.   In 2013, Meyer Hamburg, a Swiss semiconductor supplier focused on photovoltaic technology, launched smartwire connection technology. This technology uses a foil wire electrode with 24 wires to connect solar cells and is said to reduce the amount of silver used in each heterojunction component by more than half, thereby reducing costs and reducing manufacturers’ reliance on the unstable silver market. According to Meyer Burger, smart connection technology can increase the performance of silicon wafer cells by 5%.

  The Swiss company Meyer Burger announced its 410-watt 72-cell battery pack, which combines heterojunction battery technology and smart connection technology, with an average conversion efficiency of 23.4%.
