According to foreign media reports, a few days ago, major Japanese automakers Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Panasonic jointly launched a new research and development project-solid-state batteries. The Lithium-ion Battery Technology and Evaluation Center Consortium (Libtec) received US$14 million in funding from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan. Solid-state battery technology is now increasingly recognized as the next major R&D direction in the development of electric vehicles.

This kind of battery uses a solid electrolyte, which can provide higher energy density than current lithium-ion batteries and is less likely to generate heat during operation. At the same time, their cost will likely be lower, and they will be safer and more reliable than current batteries.

Libtec's ultimate goal is to jointly develop a battery technology that can support 800 kilometers of cruising range by 2030. The short-term goal is 550 kilometers, which far exceeds the endurance of current electric vehicles and is on par with Tesla's Model S100D-but does not require expensive 100kWh battery packs like the latter.
