A new breakthrough in lithium batteries that can double the battery life of electric vehicles
Battery technology is advancing with each passing day, and the driving distance of electric vehicles is also improving day by day! Battery technology is changing with each passing day, and the driving distance of electric cars is also improving! Korean scientists released the latest electric car, which can travel 300 kilometers per charge, has twice the endurance of ordinary electric cars, and has 4 times the stored power.
The State Academy of Science and Technology (Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology, GIST) announced on the 10th that Eom Gwang-sup, a professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at GIST, and Lee Jung-tae, a postdoctoral researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Electronic Research Laboratory, have worked together to develop the latest lithium battery. Compared with products on the market, the new lithium battery has 4 times the power storage capacity and twice the battery life.
Traditional lithium batteries use graphite and lithium metal oxide (LithiumMetalOxide) as cathodes and anodes. Because these two materials have low power storage, after the current technology development, the power storage is close to the limit, so the electric vehicle The storage capacity of the battery does not add much space.
Therefore, the Korean research team decided to use a completely new material to make the cathode and anode of the battery, using silicon and sulfur. Scientists specially added selenium to protect the silicon cathode, and then developed a cathode with lithium and silicon. In addition, sulfur and selenium were used to make the anode.
The latest lithium battery can store about 500mAh of electricity per gram, compared to the batteries on the market which can only store 100-150mAh of electricity per gram. This means that an electric car can run 300 kilometers per charge, which is twice as far as an ordinary electric car.
Not only that, the new lithium battery will only shrink by 19% after 1,500 cycles of charging and discharging. In other words, if the user recharges it once a day, it can be used stably for 4 years without changing the battery; if the new lithium battery is applied to a smart phone, the weight of the phone can be reduced by half.
