Unique progress and development prospects of solid-state lithium-ion battery technology

Technology giants including South Korea’s Samsung (Samsung) and Britain’s Dyson (Dyson) have collectively invested US$65 million in a small company, IonicMaterials. Futurism reported that such trust is shocking because IonicMaterials seems to be in solid-state battery technology. Make unique progress. IonicMaterials was established in 1986, and was supported by the legendary Bill Joy in Silicon Valley at the beginning. Last month, this small company completed a Series C financing of up to 65 million U.S. dollars. Investors included South Korean Samsung (Samsung), British Dyson (Dyson), and automaker Renault, which were not officially announced but confirmed by sources. (Renault S.A.), Nissan (Nissan), Mitsubishi (Mitsubishi) led the operation of venture capital company Alliance Ventures and so on. Bill Joey is betting on a solid-state alkaline battery, which is the same as the batteries in daily life such as flashlights and remote controls, but it can be recharged and is suitable for electric vehicles, power grids and household power storage purposes. The important thing is that it is cheaper and safer than lithium-ion batteries. Although it may be 5 years before commercialization, the IonicMaterials promotional video shows that even if someone directly hits a bullet into the surface of the battery, the battery can still work normally. IonicMaterials focuses on manufacturing a new polymer to replace the liquid electrolyte in today's lithium-ion batteries. "Futurism" reported that so far, IonicMaterials researchers have announced three major breakthroughs. First, they asserted that lithium ions move in polymers. It is faster than conventional liquid electrolytes. This is basically contrary to the existing physical knowledge. In theory, ions should be less likely to pass through solids. If this research is true, it will bring major innovations in the field of solid-state batteries. Secondly, IonicMaterials stated that its materials have a working voltage of up to 5V; thirdly, most materials in solid-state battery research work at about 60°C, but their materials can work at room temperature. If these technologies finally pass the rigorous assessment, the first commercialization target may be smartphones, but despite this, the "Axios" report pointed out that the company has not released complete public data on its technology, and many external experts still hold on to the company's research results. Skeptical. But this new material may also be the key to thawing the battery field. From the perspective of investor trends, are we about to have viable solid-state batteries?
