Clean Power Alliance and EDF signed a 600MWh energy storage project

According to reports, California’s Community Choice Aggregator (CCA) Clean Power Alliance recently stated that it has signed a contract with EDF Renewables, a subsidiary of French utility company EDF, to purchase electricity for a large-scale solar + energy storage project. 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA).

EDF Renewables is deploying this project called Desert Quartzite Solar + Energy Storage in Riverside County, California, which is designated as a Solar Energy Development Area (SEZ) by the US Federal Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The Desert Quartzite solar + energy storage project will deploy a single-axis tracking solar farm with an installed capacity of 300MW and a battery energy storage system (BESS) with an energy storage capacity of 600MWh. The project is expected to be put into operation in February 2024.

This is the latest announcement of a large-scale solar + energy storage project in California. California is now leading the U.S. battery energy storage market, not only because the state announced the country’s first carbon neutral policy goal (California plans to achieve the goal of carbon-free electricity by 2045) and adopted clean energy facilities to replace fossil fuels, but also because Users in the state urgently need more power capacity to help meet peak power demand.

This is also the latest large-scale dispatchable solar contract signed by the California Community Choice Aggregator (CCA). The CCA allows customers to purchase electricity from the resources of their choice, while still being able to utilize the existing electricity infrastructure.

Clean Power Alliance is one of the largest CCA in California, with approximately 3 million customers in Los Angeles and Ventura County. The company has achieved some results in signing solar + energy storage power purchase agreements. Some of these deals include a 15-year power purchase agreement signed in September 2020 with energy developer 8minute Solar Energy, which plans to purchase electricity for the Rexford1 solar + energy storage project planned to be deployed in Tulare County, California. The Rexford1 project will be built on abandoned farmland. It is planned to deploy 400MW solar power generation facilities and 180MW/540MWh battery energy storage system with installed capacity, and will be put into operation in 2023.

In November last year, Clean Power Alliance also signed a 15-year power purchase agreement with energy developer sPower to purchase the Estrella solar + energy storage project deployed in the Antelope area of Los Angeles. The project plans to deploy installed capacity. The capacity is 56MW solar power generation facilities and 28MW/112MWh battery energy storage system, and will be put into operation in December 2022.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect replacement for lead-acid batteries, and they are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.

Solar power generation system with lithium battery energy storage system is a very promising clean energy.
