Parallel Connections – These connections are used when you want to increase the amperage of your battery bank. Most commonly, parallel-only connections are found in 12V systems.
The connections on this type of battery bank go from positive to positive and negative to negative. Connecting this way will double your amps (see diagram left).
Series Connections – This type of connection is used when you need to increase the voltage of your battery bank. These types of battery connections are found in all types of battery banks including 12V, 24V, and 48V systems.
For instance, making a connection to the positive and negative terminals in this orientation is different than a parallel connection. Doing so links the batteries together increases the voltage of the battery bank (see diagram right).

Here at SESCHN Batteries, we offer two different lithium battery sizes: our 100 Amp-Hour SES-DCB-12100 and HPB series, and the 200 Amp-hour SES-DCB-12200 batteries.
These two different sizes of batteries should never be connected. Any attempt to connect SESCHN Batteries of different amp-hours will result in a voided warranty.
You should only ever connect batteries of the same size.
You cannot connect batteries of different amp-hours in series with good results.
We strongly recommend you DO NOT attempt to mix battery sizes (amp-hours) and connect together. Due to differences in battery management systems and battery cell counts, there may be a charging and voltage discrepancy between batteries.
This will cause the highest voltage battery to charge the lowest voltage battery attempting to create balance in the circuit. The greater the difference in voltage, the higher the probability of battery failure.
The battery management system monitors individual cells in the battery pack. It then calculates how much current can safely go in (charge) and come out (discharge) without damaging the battery.
The current limits prevent the source (usually a battery charger) and the load (such as an inverter) from overdrawing or overcharging the battery. This protects the battery pack from cell voltages getting too high or low, which helps increase the battery’s longevity.
The BMS also monitors the remaining charge in the battery. It continually tracks the amount of energy entering and exiting the battery pack and monitoring cell voltages. It uses this data to know when the battery is drained and will shut it down. This is why lithium-ion batteries don’t show signs of dying like a lead-acid, but just shut off.
The primary function of the BMS is to protect the battery cells from damage caused by being overcharged or over-discharged. Additionally, the BMS calculates the remaining charge, monitors the battery’s temperature, monitors the battery’s health and safety by checking for loose connections and internal shorts. The BMS also balances the charge across the cells to keep each cell functioning at maximum capacity.
If it detects any unsafe conditions, the BMS shuts the battery down to protect the lithium-ion cells and the user.
A battery management system (BMS) is said to be the brain of a battery pack. The BMS is a set of electronics that monitors and manages all of the battery’s performance. Most importantly, it keeps the battery from operating outside of its safety margins.

Our batteries can be used in marine based applications, whether you live on a sailboat or fish on the lake with a trolling motor. The batteries are water resistant sealed and can handle being in a moist environment, but please make sure not to submerge your SESCHN Batteries or expose them to large amounts of water! Like any other electronics, prolonged water exposure has the potential to cause harm to both you, the batteries, and your system overall.
Our experts say it depends. Usually, you don’t have to change out any other components in your system to have it work. For example, our 12V, 100 amp hour battery will deliver 12V and will be compatible with the same system that the lead–acid batteries it’s replacing. We just have to make sure it’s sized properly and the power that’s drawn is able to be accommodated by our battery within the current limits specified by the battery.
However, our LiFePO4 batteries will discharge at a slightly higher voltage. Even though it could be at a very low state of charge, it will still exhibit a high voltage. Some chargers do not recognize this as an empty battery and will not charge it. The only changes that might have to be made for charging purposes would have to be to replace a charger that can detect that the battery is not at full charge or a charger that can be programmed.
Some other changes might have to be made to the system to make sure it’s performing at its best. Our LiFePO4 batteries can deliver a lot more power than you’d expect when you’re used to utilizing lead–acid in your system. A larger gauged cable might have to be incorporated so you can properly handle all that power. If you want to run your air conditioner off your batteries, which you can’t do easily with a lead– acid battery system, a soft starter will have to be installed onto the AC unit.
