The "disruptive" ultra-thin solar PV panels are here! Ready to install with a nail gun

　　In the process of working with customers who need lithium-ion batteries, SES Power often needs to assist customers in designing and supporting solar PV panels.

　　A solar roof tile that overturns previous perceptions has come out of nowhere. It is called "the world's first easily installable solar tile" and can be installed through the use of a nail gun.

　　GAF Energy, an integrated solar roofing company, has officially launched this new roof tile as part of the company's Timberline Solar Roof Power System, a system that integrates solar technology and roof structures.

　　The Timberline solar shingle is said to be less than a quarter of an inch thick and "blends with traditional shingles," making solar system installation a much easier pleasure. The new product was developed and validated by GAF Energy in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories, a division of the U.S. Department of Energy, which said it "verified the strength, durability and overall market completeness of the product.

　　GAF Energy is a subsidiary of Standard Industries, a sister company of North American roofing giant GAF. The company now has plans to roll out the new technology on roofs throughout North America.

　　According to one media report, a quarter of the 5 million new roofing projects installed on U.S. homes each year come from GAF.

　　GAF Energy says the company is "uniquely positioned" to bring residential solar to the mass market. Communities with GAF-certified roofers can install the products and systems.

　　A very clear trend in the industry over the last year has been the growing collaboration between home service companies and solar roofing providers. BayWa r.e., for example, is exploring the possibility of partnering with roofing company Beacon to offer both solar and roofing services.

　　Last September, Timberline Solar received "7103 certification" from safety certification company UL, which allows GAF Energy to install the system on residential rooftops as a rooftop product as well as a solar product. According to GAF Energy, this is the first product of its kind to be considered a combination of both.

　　The roof tiles will be assembled at GAF Energy's manufacturing and R&D facility in San Jose, Calif. GAF Energy moved its operations back from Asia in the middle of last year in order to capitalize on the demand for rooftop solar in the United States.

　　SES Power couldn't agree more with DeBono, as this new technology is disruptive to rooftop solar PV products, but we are more concerned about its efficiency and ability to withstand extreme weather to meet or exceed what is commonly used today.
