33MW/132MWh! Wärtsilä will deploy two BES projects in Belgium and Chile respectively
Clean energy developer Wärtsilä has announced that it will provide battery energy storage system (BESS) projects for two new markets: it has received orders from customers in Chile and Belgium.
The 8MW/32MWh battery energy storage system provided to Chilean power producer Colbun is actually Wärtsilä’s first supply transaction in South America, although the company has delivered numerous thermal power plant solutions in the region, including the recent Project announced by Brazil.
(Wärtsilä will provide GridSolve Quantum energy storage system and engineering services to Colbun in Chile)
The battery energy storage system provided by Wärtsilä will be co-located with the 230MW Digigode Almagro solar farm operated by Colbun in Chile’s Atacama Desert, which is known as the sunniest place on earth. This battery energy storage system is expected to be put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2022. Wärtsilä will provide engineering design and equipment delivery.
The GridSolv Quantum fully integrated modular energy storage system solution provided by Wärtsilä will be used with its GEMS digital energy platform, which will manage its operations and coordinate optimization with solar farms.
The GEMS platform can use machine learning and data analysis to calculate and predict the optimal scheduling and charging cycle of the battery energy storage system.
In addition to helping Colbun's first investment in the renewable energy market and energy storage, and reducing its dependence on carbon emission energy, these BESS will also help manage the transmission network restrictions on the output of solar farms. Provide frequency response and stable capacity for the local grid during peak power demand periods.
During the COP26 meeting, the Chilean government announced that it would cooperate with the American power project developer AES to invest US$400 million to deploy a 188MW battery energy storage system, thereby promoting the development of the Chilean energy storage industry.
A few days ago, Wärtsilä stated that it has received a supply order for a 25MW/100MWh battery energy storage project in Belgium. The company did not disclose the terms of the transaction or the names of customers. However, industry media reported that Belgium has awarded long-term capacity market contracts for two 25MW/100MWh battery energy storage systems under its new capacity compensation mechanism (CRM).
Wärtsilä has begun construction of Australia’s largest battery energy storage project to date. This is a 250MW/250MWh battery energy storage project deployed at the Torrance Island power station in South Australia. It is Australia’s largest generator retailer AGL company provides services.
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect replacement for lead-acid batteries, and they are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.
