Statkraft has obtained approval to build a large-scale wind power project in Chile, while French energy developer TotalEren is also developing a 1GW wind power project in Kazakhstan. 　　Statkraft Chile, the Chilean subsidiary of Norwegian State Power Company, said last week that the company will develop, construct and operate a wind farm with a total installed capacity of 400MW and a large-scale energy storage system in the Antofagasta region of Chile.

　　This wind + energy storage project will be connected to the grid through its substation 15 kilometers away, and will join Statkraft’s portfolio of renewable energy assets in Chile: a 100MW wind farm under construction by the company and a 600MW project under environmental assessment. The Pauna solar power plant and hydropower facilities of more than 100MW that have been opened and put into operation soon.

　　The project will require an investment of approximately US$500 million and will be deployed on 2,610 hectares of land. Although the bidding contract requires this wind power + energy storage project to be put into operation before 2030, Statkraft said in a press release that it can start operations several years in advance.

　　A Statkraft spokesperson said that the company is considering deploying a 1GMWh battery energy storage system on site with a continuous discharge time of 5 hours. The battery energy storage system will store and use the electricity from the wind farm, which can be used when the wind is insufficient. Provide electricity.

　　And because solar farms generate high power during the day, the price of electricity in Chile can be significantly reduced. Therefore, the company’s spokesperson said, “We may build a solar farm that can charge the battery energy storage system.”

　　The spokesperson said that Stakraft expects to use lithium-ion batteries, but may also determine energy storage technology after the project plan is finalized. The company has enough time to build this project and can still easily complete the task on time.

　　He said that due to the intermittency or variability of wind power and solar power, energy storage systems are a "perfect match" for providing energy around the clock. He added that Statkraft is building four solar farms in Chile, and these projects will be equipped with battery energy storage systems.

　　Project B

　　Total Eren, the independent power producer (IPP) of French energy developer Total Energies, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kazakhstan Ministry of Energy and other government agencies to develop a 1GW wind power project and 500MW to 1GWh batteries Energy storage system.

　　Total Eren said that battery energy storage manufacturer Saft (also a subsidiary of Total Energies) will provide the battery energy storage system for the project. This renewable energy facility will be deployed in central Kazakhstan, which is the largest renewable energy + energy storage project planned by Kazakhstan's independent renewable energy generators.

　　The expected working life of the project is 30 years. Total Eren has already carried out energy development business in the country and deployed two solar farms with a total installed capacity of 128MW, which will be put into operation in 2019.
