  In 2020, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) issued the latest requirements for grid-connected inverters (IEEE 1547.1-2020): When connecting DER (such as solar energy, energy storage, and wind energy) to the grid, inverter The inverter must have the function of "interconnection", that is, "smart inverter", which allows customers to "view" relevant information (voltage and frequency) online, and can automatically respond to actions that maintain the stability of the grid.

  The new standard has created an application guide for DER businesses, explaining what kind of "grid support" function inverter products should have, paving the way for states in the United States to adopt more modern data interconnection, and has contributed for supporting grid modernization for renewable energy and energy storage.

  Now that IEEE 1547.1-2020 has been released, inverter and other equipment manufacturers can redesign existing products to meet the requirements. R&D engineers should have an in-depth understanding of these new functional requirements and test standards to ensure that the product developed can pass the test once the design is completed.

  There will be a transition period from the issuance of the standards to the formal implementation, and manufacturers have about 19 months to pass the certification of these new standards. During this period, manufacturers can continue to use earlier standards for product certification.
