European Commission: 1000GW solar installation target by 2030

  On March 9, the European Commission released a much-anticipated plan that will address Europe's current energy security and price challenges, while accelerating development to reach the 2030 target of 1,000GW of solar power.

  European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans has laid out a strategic plan for renewable energy, hoping to wean Europe off Russian gas as soon as possible while helping Europe out of soaring energy prices.

  Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO of SolarPower Europe, said: "The EU needs to wean itself off Russian gas and oil as quickly as possible, with more than 30GW of solar PV to be deployed by the end of 2022, including 1.5 million new solar roofs.

  Over the past few years, even in a tough market, Europe has continued to ramp up its efforts in solar power, with new installations exceeding expectations each year.   The proposal highlights the role of rooftop solar in the electricity supply of EU countries, with the goal of installing 15TWh of solar roofs by the end of 2022. Including the rooftop solar target, the EU plans to add 420GW of solar by 2030, bringing the EU's total installed solar capacity to 565GW.

  SolarPower Europe's conservative estimates put the most likely scenario for a projected 672GW of solar capacity in the EU by 2030. And if the development is accelerated, a higher installed capacity target of 1000GW can be achieved by 2030.

  In response to the European Commission's proposal, and recognizing the urgency of the renewable energy transition, SolarPower Europe has published a roadmap for achieving TW-scale solar in Europe, which provides market conditions, outlines the practical scope of solar expansion, and proposes four This policy requires:

  A: By increasing investment, mandating the installation of solar energy on new buildings, and banning the use of fossil fuel boilers, rooftop PV capacity will multiply.

  B: Promote the development of large-scale ground-based power plants by freezing grid connection fees and requiring member states to identify suitable solar photovoltaic power plants.

  C: Leverage dedicated CEF-E and RRF funding, and the creation of a new project working group to advance smart solar and hybrid projects.

  D: Accelerate the construction of solar PV manufacturing in the EU with 1 billion euros of venture capital from InvestEU and the Innovation Fund.

  It is worth noting, however, that in the 420 GW solar target proposed by RePower EU, the focus is on accelerating solar installations, increasing the installation rate by 20%. Another 80 GW of renewable energy capacity is reserved to accommodate the development of hydrogen energy.
