  The annual installed capacity of residential battery energy storage systems (RESS) deployed globally is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 21.3% from 2021 to 2030, according to US energy consultancy Guidehouse Insights.

  Guidehouse Insights research group predicts that by 2030, residential battery storage systems will account for half of all residential electric system sales, and its market share will be equal to that of backup generator sets.

  Diesel generators or natural gas generation facilities currently account for the majority of the market for backup power, and they were deployed last year for around 80% of total installed capacity, with battery energy storage systems (BESS) making up the rest. But Guidehouse Insights expects genset deployments to grow steadily for a decade, while battery storage will grow to around half of total installed backup capacity by 2030.

  William Hughes, principal research analyst at Guidehouse Insights, said, "While backup generators remain the primary backup power source, the most important trend is the increasing adoption of residential battery energy storage systems (RESS) by households. This trend is This has grown as residential users increasingly deploy residential solar, as residential battery storage systems are often deployed alongside solar.”

  One event noted by the industry media is the move by U.S. backup power solutions provider Generac (one of the largest U.S. generator set manufacturers and suppliers) to offer battery energy storage systems to residential customers, with sales growing rapidly in 2021, which is driven by customer safety awareness of outage events. The company recently increased the ability of its PWRcell-branded residential battery storage systems to sell electricity to the grid.

  The third backup power technology after backup generators and battery storage is thermal storage, but Guidehouse has not publicly disclosed its expected growth or the percentage of deployment in 2030. The company said that the main driver for residential customers to deploy energy storage is to reduce the inconvenience caused by power outages, but in some cases, to reduce costs and increase the use of renewable energy.

  But the company warned that the battery storage industry still faces many challenges. Issues such as how complex it is to obtain accurate information on benefits and costs, the need for on-site assessments, and the diversity and specificity of available subsidies.

This situation has damaged the reputation of the energy storage industry and slowed the adoption of residential battery storage systems, which explains why some residential users still opt for mature technologies such as backup generator sets.
