SB Energy, a subsidiary of Soft Bank Group Corp, has announced an order for 1.5GW of advanced ultra-low carbon thin-film photovoltaic solar modules from First Solar. SB Energy will deploy the modules on its 4GW solar and storage project in the US.

　　The order follows SB Energy's initial procurement of 1.7GW of First Solar modules for five utility-scale projects in Texas and California. Construction of the projects began in 2020, expanding the partnership between SB Energy and First Solar to a cumulative 3.2GW of solar projects.

　　Over the past six months, SB Energy's teams have achieved commercial operations of 1.3GW at projects in Texas and California, providing reliable clean energy to more than 250,000 homes and supporting more than 250,000 homes. 10,000 jobs, including 3,000 direct jobs during construction. The remaining 0.4GW of the original 1.7GW procurement is expected to reach commercial operations in the first half of 2022.

　　All 1.5GW of modules in the order will be produced at First Solar's Ohio manufacturing facility, which will support SB Energy's plan to have a 10GW renewable energy and storage project in operation or under construction by the end of 2025.

　　First Solar's R&D centers in California and Ohio are responsible for project design and development, producing advanced thin-film photovoltaic modules. The company also implements an advanced recycling program that recycles more than 90 percent of CadTel semiconductor material for new components.

　　Last year, First Solar announced it would invest $680 million in plans to build its third U.S. manufacturing facility in Lake Town, Ohio, expanding U.S. domestic photovoltaic solar manufacturing capacity by 3.3 GW/year. The new plant is expected to be fully operational, bringing total Northwest Ohio capacity to 6GW/year. It is believed to be the largest fully vertically integrated solar manufacturing facility outside of China.
