  According to the US Energy Storage Monitoring Report released by Wood Mackenzie and the American Energy Storage Association (ESA), the US energy storage market will deploy 3515MWh energy storage systems in the third quarter of 2021, setting a record high.   The report pointed out that due to the expected extension of the US solar investment tax credit (ITC) policy, the ITC for independent deployment of energy storage systems, and the approval of the California photovoltaic and energy storage deployment plan, a significant increase The forecast for energy storage deployment in the fourth quarter.

  Jason Burwen, interim CEO of the American Energy Storage Association, said: "The era of energy storage has arrived. After the installed capacity of energy storage systems deployed last year reached 1GW for the first time, US energy storage manufacturers installed 1GW of energy storage projects within one quarter of this year. The energy storage system has always been regarded as an energy technology that changes the rules of the power market, and the rapid growth of the energy storage market in the third quarter shows that the rules of the game for power system investment have changed."

  According to this report, the United States deployed 998MW/3198MWh grid-side energy storage systems in the third quarter, with California, Texas, and Arizona leading the US energy storage market. California continues to be a leader in the deployment of grid-side energy storage projects. The three energy storage projects developed by NextEra Energy Resources near Blythe accounted for the majority of energy storage deployments in the third quarter. The energy storage project developed by Broad Reach Power in Texas also increased the installed capacity of grid-side energy storage projects in the third quarter.

  Wood Mackenzie’s energy storage market analyst Vanessa Witte said: “According to our forecast, there will be as many as 4.7GW of energy storage systems in use in the United States in 2021. This means that the growth in the third quarter is only a series of online operations this year and next year. The beginning of a large-scale energy storage project."

  The report also showed that the installed capacity of the residential energy storage market in the United States increased slightly, with 97.9 MW/225MWh residential energy storage systems deployed in the third quarter. However, there are still problems with the timetable for the deployment of residential solar + energy storage projects. The shortage of solar modules and battery products is the main challenge that causes the backlog of these projects. However, energy storage suppliers and installers managed to increase the deployment of residential energy storage systems in the second quarter of this year.

  In addition, the non-residential energy storage market has also created a new high, deploying 43.6MW/92.1MWh. The virtual grid and community solar power generation projects supporting the deployment of energy storage systems contributed most of the non-residential energy storage capacity in the third quarter, most of which were non-residential projects deployed in California.
