  Powin Energy and EVLO launch large-scale BESS

  Powin Energy, a US energy storage system integrator and manufacturer, and EVLO, a subsidiary of Quebec Hydro Corporation of Canada, have both launched BESS suitable for utility companies and large-scale industrial application scenarios.

  Powin Energy is one of the more well-known companies in the energy storage industry. So far, it has built and delivered more than 1200MWh BESSs, and plans to deploy more than 4500MWh BESSs in the next 3 years.

  The company launched its first modular battery energy storage platform, named Centipede. This platform allows the stacking and connection of BESSs. Up to 200MWh or more can be connected to BESSs. The Centipede battery energy storage platform will be created by the new Stack750E battery provided by Powin Energy.

  At the same time, EVLO is a new entrant in the global battery energy storage market and a subsidiary of Quebec Hydro, a public utility company owned by the Canadian provincial government, at the end of 2020. The EVLO1000 BESS has an energy storage capacity of 1MWh and mainly uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

  A: Powin Energy's Centipede battery energy storage platform

  Powin Energy launched its Stack series battery energy storage products in 2020. The company said that the Stack750E BESS designed for the Centipede battery energy storage platform can be controlled and monitored as part of a large energy storage system, or it can be performed independently. The company did not specify which types of batteries and other equipment can be used, but said it can adapt to a wide range of configurations and specifications, and can be expanded.

  The company has signed a long-term supply agreement for LFP with China-based battery manufacturers CATL and EVE Energy, and said it will purchase batteries in the US domestic market in the future.

  The Stack750E BESS completed an independently verified fire test in November this year in accordance with the UL standard of the energy storage and power equipment safety service provider ESRG.

  Nick Warner, the founding principal of ESRG, said that large-scale fire testing is one of UL9540A's test content. The preliminary investigation results show that even in the event of a major fire, the Stack750E BESS can well prevent the battery between the batteries. The fire spread.

  B: EVLO1000 BESS launched by EVLO

  EVLO said that the first energy storage project constructed with the EVLO1000 BESS will provide support for the upgrade and transformation of high-voltage transmission lines in Quebec.

  Although it is a newly established company, EVLO said that it will benefit from 40 years of research and development work by its parent company and be able to provide customers with large-scale BESS.

  Like Powin Energy, EVLO also talked about the safety design of its new products. The company said that the EVLO1000 BESS is equipped with more than 200 real-time temperature monitoring sensors, gas detection, active ventilation systems and fire sprinklers.

  Silicon Valley-based energy technology developer Nuvation Energy stated that the company will provide EVLO’s energy storage system with a battery management system (BMS) and has also signed a resale agreement for Nuvation Energy to sell EVLO battery energy storage solutions.

  Nuvation Energy's BMS is designed for large-scale high-voltage applications and can use various types of batteries.

  Guillaume Hayet, President and CEO of EVLO, said, "A highly reliable battery management system is the key to any energy storage system."

  In the past year and a half, companies that have introduced new large-scale BESSs to the global energy storage market include Wärtsilä, Pylon Tech, Fluence, Sungrow, LS Power, Tesla, Saft, Leclanché, etc.

  These BESSs, which are modular, easy to install and transport, cost-reduced, and safe, are being promoted to the energy storage market.
