Review and Outlook of European Household Energy Storage Data (2021-2025)

　　On November 24, the European Photovoltaic Industry Association released the latest "European Household Battery Energy Storage Market Outlook 2021-2025" report.

　　From the data disclosed in the report, the growth trend of household battery energy storage in Europe is very strong: In 2020, about 140,000 household battery systems were installed in Europe, and the installed capacity reached 1072 MWh in just one year, a year-on-year increase of 44%.

　　This includes milestone figures-the European BESS market has added 100,000 systems within a year for the first time, reaching the annual GWh scale for the first time. By the end of 2020, the total European household battery storage market has grown by 54%, with installed capacity exceeding 3GWh. Compared with 5 years ago, the total storage capacity has increased by 14 times.

　　Although there has been a significant increase, we found that the market is mainly concentrated in several European countries. For example, Germany accounts for 70% of the newly installed energy storage capacity, followed by Italy, the United Kingdom, Austria and Switzerland. These five major markets have a market share of 93%. It was even higher last year. The entire industry shows a highly concentrated pattern.

　　Germany is a strong country for residential solar photovoltaic and residential battery energy storage systems in Europe. Due to the outstanding performance of the domestic photovoltaic market in 2020 and the high allocation rate of battery energy storage, the BESS market has grown substantially, reaching 749MWh, an increase of 51% year-on-year.

　　In Italy, in addition to the existing support plan, strong financial incentives have been introduced for solar and energy storage, resulting in an annual market growth rate of 44% and an installed capacity of 94MWh. Different market conditions have allowed the remaining top three countries to achieve double-digit growth-including the UK's consumer-friendly electricity prices, Austria and Switzerland's policy support and incentives.

　　The report points out that in the next 5 years the market will have the same trend-the top 5 countries will account for 88% of the market. SPE predicts that the installed capacity of household energy storage in Europe will reach 1.37GWh in 2021, 1.67GWh in 2022, 1.96GWh in 2023, and 2.21GWh in 2024.

　　In 2025, it will increase to 2.51 GWh, an increase of 134% over 2020, and the cumulative market capacity is expected to increase more than 4 times to 12.8 GWh. In all years during this period, the annual growth rate will remain above 20%.

　　Under optimal conditions, by the end of 2025, the battery capacity of European residents for production and consumers can reach 14.6 GWh, while under low expectations, this figure is 10.2 GWh.

　　The report has deeply studied the specific characteristics of the top four European markets. These markets will continue to provide the strongest impetus for the development of household battery energy storage in the entire European region.

　　In its five-year analysis, Germany will continue to maintain an undisputed leading position in the field of residential energy storage, followed by Italy.
