Hitachi Energy launches a new generation of PowerStore battery ESS.48v li ion battery

  Hitachi Energy has recently launched a new version of the PowerStore battery energy storage system, as well as an update of the Grid Edge solution.

  This is the first time the company has updated its distributed energy solution product portfolio since it went public in October last year. The company had previously traded as Hitachi ABB Grid.

  Hitachi Energy set up a "collaborative operation center" earlier this year, which is a global network of facilities that can provide utility companies and industrial customers with remote grid interaction and grid automation services.

  The company's digital automation product and service portfolio is called "e-mesh", which is mainly used to control, dispatch and optimize the use of distributed energy, including the PowerStore battery energy storage system.

  Maxine Ghavi, head of the program at Hitachi Energy, said: "The energy market is currently undergoing transformation, and the scope and urgency of challenges are expanding. It is no longer a change, but multiple changes that occur simultaneously, and these changes are all established. On the basis of accelerating the realization of electrification."

  Hitachi Energy said that the design concept of the PowerStore battery energy storage system has been upgraded to integration or modularization, depending on customer needs. It has an optimized interface and can be connected with different lithium-ion battery solutions from two battery suppliers, such as CATL’s lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) and Samsung’s nickel-manganese-cobalt ternary lithium battery (NMC).

  A spokesperson for the company said that it has "coordinated" grid code availability-the ability to operate flexibly in markets and regions with multiple grid codes. The system provides configurations ranging from 50kW to MW, and at the same time has enhanced network security features, which is designed to meet the needs of larger-scale energy storage projects demanded by the market.

  A Hitachi Energy spokesperson said: "In addition, there is an increasing demand for battery energy storage projects to connect to the grid. We help customers meet these requirements and provide a full set of dynamic simulation models."

  The e-mesh product portfolio update also includes a new energy management system (EMS), additional options for cloud-based monitoring and performance adjustment, as well as new options for MicroSCADA automation and RTU-based control. e-mesh now also includes technology that can be used for vehicle-to-grid (V2G) bidirectional power flow.

  The spokesperson said that these updates make e-mesh very suitable for the electric vehicle (EV) fleet charging market; the e-mesh kit can create the microgrid-like infrastructure required to charge electric vehicle fleets, from integrated battery energy storage systems to manage and predict load.

  Hitachi Energy’s Maxine Ghavi said, “We have learned from customers around the world that they don’t just want a product for microgrids, energy storage systems, or control systems, but they need a flexible and optimized solution. Solutions to reduce complexity and provide the highest penetration rate of renewable energy, while improving overall stability and reliability. This also means that they will eventually need more digital services."
