British clean energy developer Tag Energy recently stated that it plans to build two new 50MW battery energy storage projects in the UK, both of which will use Tesla Megapack lithium-ion batteries.
Tag Energy acquired 60% of two 50MW battery energy storage projects at a cost of nearly 60 million pounds. The deal was reached in a joint venture with British renewable energy and battery energy storage developer Harmony Energy.
The two battery energy storage projects are the 49.5MW/99MWh Chapel Farm battery energy storage project planned to be deployed near Luton, England, and the 49MW/98MWh Jamesfield Farm battery energy storage project planned to be deployed near Abenecy, Scotland.
Tag Energy said it will use Tesla's Megapack lithium-ion battery energy storage system and Autobidder AI software for real-time transactions and control. Tag Energy was founded by Franck Wotiez, the former head of Neoen Australia.
Woitiez said, "These projects underscore Tag Energy's commitment to using strong energy storage expertise to support the UK grid to provide more sustainable, competitive and clean electricity in order to accelerate the energy transition." Neoen Australia led by him at the time in 2017, the company deployed the Hornsdale battery energy storage project using Tesla battery energy storage system in South Australia.
The construction of these two energy storage projects deployed in the UK is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2022 and be put into use in the first quarter of 2023.
The Chapel Farm battery energy storage project and the Jamesfield Farm battery energy storage project mark Tag Energy’s third investment in the UK energy storage market. The company entered the UK market earlier this year and opened in Hawkers, Dorset in September. Hill Energy Park has deployed a battery energy storage project and the acquisition of the Roaring Hill battery energy storage project of 50MW in Fife, Scotland.
Peter Kavanagh, CEO of Harmony Energy, said: "It is widely believed that battery energy storage systems are critical to achieving net zero emissions in the UK, and projects of this scale can be delivered without subsidies. This is essential for providing flexibility to the grid. We look forward to cooperating with Tag Energy on these projects."
Harmony Energy has a more energy portfolio in the UK, which includes 15 wind power projects and 13 battery energy storage projects in operation or under construction, as well as a solar power project.
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect substitute for lead-acid batteries, and are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.
Solar power generation system with lithium battery energy storage system is a very promising clean energy.
