The "Victoria Big Battery" energy storage project operated in Victoria, Australia, set a new record for battery charging and discharging in the test.
The commissioning of the Victoria Battery was suspended in late July this year due to a fire in a container of Tesla's Megapack energy storage system during preliminary testing. After being put into operation, the energy storage project will become Australia's current largest battery energy storage system, with a total capacity of 300MW/450MWh, and will be fully operational during the peak summer power demand in Australia.
The energy storage project set a new power generation record when it stepped up testing a few weeks ago, and set a new benchmark a few days ago, because it was allowed to enter a new "stopping inspection point"-grid operation Businesses gradually evaluate the performance of the energy storage system and its impact on the grid.
As shown in the figure below (provided by Paul McArdle of NEM Review), the energy storage project is charged with an installed capacity of 205MW after 8 am, and then discharged with an installed capacity of 250MW in a short period of time, so as to gain insight into its impact on the local grid and the potential impact of the wholesale market.
In this case, the fluctuation from charging to discharging exceeds 455MW, which provides market operators with tremendous flexibility and available resources.
Neoen has signed a 10-year contract for the electricity from Victoria’s Large Battery, which will use its resources to expand the capacity of the main transmission line between Victoria and New South Wales, which will allow more to be provided during peak summer demand electricity.
The Victorian battery is owned and operated by Neoen, which also owns the Hornsdale energy storage project (currently 150MW/194MWh) built with Tesla energy storage system and the 20MW/34MWh Bulgana battery operated in Victoria Energy storage system.
Neoen has also contracted to deploy a large battery energy storage system in Canberra, and plans to deploy multiple large battery energy storage systems in Queensland (Kaban and Western Downs), New South Wales and South Australia (Goyder South and Crystal Brook).
