Can renewable energy stabilize and support the grid? Hawaiian got the answer

According to a report provided by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), the Hawaiian Electric Company has increased the application of clean energy on five islands, and it is estimated that 100% of the electricity can come from renewable energy in 2045.

In 2020, Maui's renewable energy accounted for 50.8%. It is estimated that by 2024, nearly 175 megawatts of solar power + battery energy storage will be put into use on Maui Island. This can provide renewable energy to approximately 70,000 customers on Maui, without using traditional power sources most of the time. But managing such a high percentage of uncertain power resources is a very challenging task, so NREL is developing and verifying what is the most suitable method or tool that can bring Maui closer to 100% clean and stable energy. future.

Operators only need to use these tools to properly manage renewable energy and be able to provide the services needed to maintain the grid. NREL project leader Jin Tan explained: "Technically speaking, inverter-based resources, such as wind energy, solar energy and battery storage, can be programmed to provide all types of grid auxiliary services." Tan said: "The problem now is System operators basically do not use renewable energy. They need modern tools to verify the performance of renewable energy systems, or to manage and dispatch the economic and operational risks associated with variable resources."

Tan led the development of the Multi-Time Scale Integrated Dynamic Dispatch Model (MIDAS), which enables grid operators to efficiently manage renewable energy systems.

A hybrid renewable energy power plant contains at least two renewable energy technologies, including storage. For example, such hybrid renewable energy power plants can use multiple hybrid photovoltaic (PV) power plants or solar and hydro hybrid power plants. The hybrid renewable energy system can be used as an independent power system to provide electricity to remote areas.

Maui's fully renewable energy project is called "SAPPHIRE", a hybrid renewable energy power plant that combines the latest control technology and tools, and the stability is very expected. The $3.6 million project jointly researched by Hoke and Tan is integrated with the MIDAS operating framework through stability control. The system of the project on Maui will be demonstrated at 60 MW. Although the demonstration has only been carried out for three years, 100% renewable energy is still possible. If so, Maui will probably set a milestone in renewable energy, meaning that this model can achieve the same goals in any clean energy system.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect substitute for lead-acid batteries and are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.
