According to Korea IT News, LG Energy Solutions began mass production of lithium batteries for General Motors' first large electric truck in the United States in October.
The first batch of products will be produced at LG Energy Solution’s South Korean plant, and Ultium Cells, a joint venture established by the two companies, will start production in 2022. Industry insiders predict that LG will start the production line of GM batteries in the fourth quarter.
This battery production line is specially built for GM's "Hummer" brand pure electric heavy-duty trucks. It is packaged in a long soft package with a size of 580mm×113mm. This kind of battery can improve the energy density more than the cylindrical packaged battery.
This soft-pack battery uses NCMA cathode material, which is the first time that LG Energy Solutions has applied quaternary materials to soft-pack batteries. Specifically, this electrode has 85% nickel, which reduces the proportion of cobalt by 15% compared with existing quaternary batteries for electric vehicles, which helps reduce costs.
The capacity of this battery cell is said to be more than 100Ah, and when used in new cars, it can last more than 600 kilometers.
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect substitute for lead-acid batteries, and are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.
