  A new study carried out by researchers from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Vermont-based non-profit organization Clean Energy Group found that the cost of grid outages can change the break-even point of photovoltaic and storage system investments.

  In the report, the author wrote: “Even if solar power generation systems and energy storage systems seem uneconomical under traditional cost-benefit calculations, after evaluating the losses caused by unexpected events such as grid outages, solar power generation and the energy storage system becomes a reasonable investment financially."

  "Obviously, the assessment of emergencies will indeed increase the value of solar and energy storage system projects." Seth Mullendore, vice president and project director of Clean Energy Group, said, "This undoubtedly increases the economic viability of the project."

  Joyce McLaren, a renewable energy research analyst at NREL, said that they did not know that government agencies are working to develop US national standards to assess the resilience provided by solar and energy storage systems. However, avoiding grid outages caused by extreme weather events is the top priority of government officials.

  McLaren said, "The reason we are interested in this is that many building owners and other stakeholders (including city planners and government departments) are beginning to pay attention to the impact of power outages."

  He cited a successful model, the Massachusetts Community Clean Energy Disaster Prevention Plan, which is a $40 million project funded by the local government. The project aims to deploy solar cells, energy storage systems and other clean energy technologies to avoid service interruptions.
