Lithium battery management system, abbreviated BMS, is a system for battery management. It usually has the function of measuring battery voltage to prevent or avoid abnormal conditions such as battery over-discharge, over-charge, over-temperature..., and expand software communication functions. Lithium batteries need a BMS for three main reasons, which are also the role of BMS:
(1) Improve the safety of lithium batteries
Lithium batteries may have defects such as explosions due to their high energy density.
Overcharge or over-discharge of lithium batteries can cause irreversible damage to the cells.
Lithium batteries are also extremely sensitive to temperature. Using lithium batteries under high temperature conditions may cause burns or even explosions. If the temperature is too low, the performance of the lithium battery will deteriorate significantly.
(2) Solve the problem of lithium battery consistency
Generally, due to the limitation of the cell manufacturing process, the internal resistance and capacity of each cell will be different.
When multiple cells are used in series or in parallel, the charging and discharging rate of each cell will be inconsistent, and a special protection system is usually required to monitor the health of the battery.
(3) Reduce the difficulty of maintaining lithium batteries
The capacity decay and power of lithium batteries cannot be accurately predicted, resulting in huge costs for the detection, maintenance, and replacement of distributed lithium batteries.
In order to reduce maintenance workload and maintenance costs, it is necessary for the lithium battery BMS management system to have accurate capacity calculation functions and to expand related software for remote monitoring.
