  Three major issues restricting the development of lithium battery energy storage industry

  In the context of the accelerated decline in the cost of lithium batteries, the lithium battery energy storage industry has great potential for development.

  (1) There are hidden dangers in safety.

  Under the action of internal and external factors such as overcharging, overdischarging, overheating, and mechanical collision, lithium batteries can easily cause internal short circuits in the battery, leading to thermal runaway and safety issues.

  Traditional safety firefighting measures often cannot effectively suppress the thermal runaway of lithium batteries, which will cause the initial fire to spread rapidly, and then evolve into a large-scale fire. Between August 2017 and May 2019, South Korea experienced 23 energy storage power station fire accidents one after another. The South Korean government once suspended all running energy storage power station projects.

  Solving the safety issues of lithium battery energy storage systems has become a top priority.

  (2) The development of policy standards and technical specifications lags behind

  The lithium battery energy storage industry is still in the development period, and the relevant policies of governments of various countries will still be the main driving force for the development of the market.

  However, many countries have insufficient research on related strategies and policies, and lack of effective guiding policies and incentive measures, which is not conducive to the further expansion and strengthening of the lithium battery energy storage industry.

  (3) Technical standards are lagging behind

  There are no convincing international standards for the quality and life requirements of most lithium battery energy storage systems, especially the safety requirements for high voltage, high current, and explosion-proof.

  The above problems have become the main crux that affects the standardized development of the industry, which may lead to problems such as oversimplification of energy storage project design, fuzzy performance indicators, lack of inspection, and potential safety hazards.
