Research on the actual situation of a lithium-ion battery heated to 250 degrees Celsius under thermal imaging

Lithium-ion batteries are almost everywhere in life. Electronic products such as mobile phones, tablets, cameras, and notebook computers all need to be powered by lithium-ion batteries. However, lithium batteries can sometimes overheat or explode due to certain unexpected conditions. With the increasing capacity of batteries today, user safety issues have also attracted special attention.

Recently, researchers from the University of London used 3D thermal imaging technology to track and record the heating process of lithium-ion batteries. We saw that the lithium battery in the video was heated to 250 degrees Celsius (482 degrees Fahrenheit) and then rapidly expanded in volume until it exploded. Researchers called this process "thermal runaway". The results show that the internal structure of the lithium battery will not change before the "thermal runaway", but at the moment of the explosion, the copper material inside the battery melts and the temperature rises to 1000 degrees Celsius, and the generated heat diffuses from the inside to cause "thermal runaway" ". Lithium batteries are usually installed inside the device and connected to other electronic components. "Thermal runaway" not only causes the battery core to collapse, but also increases the risk of short circuits inside the device and damage to nearby objects.
