StoreDot, an Israeli company that is one of the leaders in solid-state battery technology, says it is currently testing a battery that can be charged in as little as five minutes. This product has attracted investment from Volvo Cars and Daimler Trucks.
So it does come as a bit of a surprise when we hear StoreDot say in a press release that solid-state batteries are still 10 years away from commercial production and that automakers should focus on interim solutions in the meantime.
Leading battery developers like StoreDot must provide global automakers with a realistic and hype-free roadmap for the eventual introduction of extremely fast charging battery technology," said Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot. At this point, despite some claims by our competitors, it will be at least 10 years before solid-state batteries are truly ready for real-world applications. They're certainly not a panacea for any automaker currently developing a fast-charging electric vehicle architecture.
"We think a more practical step would be to introduce semi-solid-state batteries, which we aim to have in mass production by 2028. These will be advanced, safe, high-performance batteries that can be recharged in just three minutes for a 100-mile range. They have the added benefit of a simpler, more achievable manufacturing process than all solid-state technologies."

In March, StoreDot announced its "100inX" strategic technology roadmap, which includes three generations of StoreDot technology - silicon-based XFC, semi-solid state and all-solid state. These batteries are expected to add 100 miles of range in 5 minutes, 100 miles of range in 3 minutes and 100 miles of range in 2 minutes. The first set of batteries is expected to go into production in 2024, the second in 2028 and the third in 2032.
Last month, StoreDot demonstrated the superior performance of its extreme rechargeable battery technology by delivering batteries with more than 1,000 cycles. These batteries are now being shipped in pouch form to StoreDot's global automotive OEM partners for intensive real-world application testing.
The company has revolutionized traditional lithium-ion batteries by designing and synthesizing proprietary organic and inorganic compounds optimized with artificial intelligence algorithms that allow electric vehicles to be charged in 10 minutes - the time it takes to burn the engine of an average car.
StoreDot's strategic investors and partners include Daimler, BP, VinFast, Volvo, Polestar, Ola Electric, Samsung, TDK and its manufacturing partner EVE Energy. it aims to mass produce 100 miles of technology in five minutes by 2024.
Toyota continues to insist that it will bring cars with solid-state batteries to market by 2025. Most observers are skeptical of these claims. In fact, many believe Toyota is in serious trouble if it bets on its future as the automaker's core capability for the market.
High-power, fast-charging, solid-state batteries may seem a long way off at the moment, but there are still many breakthroughs happening, and there is no doubt that better batteries are on the way. The world desperately needs small, lightweight, efficient electric vehicles that ordinary people can afford.
As a manufacturer with nearly two decades of experience in the lithium battery industry, SES Power has focused on the demand for lithium battery energy storage system products for a long time, and we have introduced corresponding products for different application scenarios to achieve the best cost performance, such as lead-acid replacement products with balanced performance of square aluminum-cased lithium iron phosphate batteries (12V100Ah, 12V200Ah, 24V100Ah, etc.), and large batteries. 24V100Ah, etc.), high-current (2000A) startup lithium battery, UPS high-voltage lithium battery system (up to 860V), 3Kw~20Kw off-grid, grid-connected, islanded lithium battery energy storage system, wall-mounted home energy storage system 48V100Ah, 48V200Ah, stacked energy storage system (single 51.2V100Ah, supporting up to 15 stacking), etc.
