The US energy storage market has always been the focus, let's take a look at the recent energy storage projects

The energy storage market in the United States has always been the hot spot and focus of the industry because of its huge demand and favorable policy environment. It’s fair to say that the world’s energy storage elites see the U.S. market as critical to their development.

SES Power has always had a good reputation in the lithium-ion battery energy storage market for the simple reason that we are a professional lithium battery energy storage system integrator with nearly two decades of experience. Our products have a high level of intelligence, such as lead-acid replacement products with Bluetooth or RS485 communication function (lithium iron phosphate battery 12V100Ah, 12V200Ah), electric ship lithium battery, electric forklift lithium battery, -40 degrees Celsius normal work Lithium battery system, UPS high voltage lithium battery system (up to 860V), 3Kw~20Kw off-grid, grid-connected, island-type lithium battery energy storage system, base station communication backup battery system (standard 19 inches), 10Mwh independent energy storage system, 100M parallel grid energy storage system, etc. We are very concerned about the development of the US energy storage industry. Let us sort out the dynamics of the US energy storage market for you.

A: ABS company launched a new large-scale battery energy storage platform TeraStor

American Battery Solutions (ABS), a U.S.-based manufacturer of battery energy storage solutions for electric vehicles and commercial and industrial (C&I), has launched a new product for the grid-scale energy storage market.

The platform, called TeraStor, is a new lithium-ion battery energy storage system (BESS) featuring a suite of StorView energy management system (EMS) software and control hardware that optimizes energy storage system performance.

TeraStor has an installed capacity of 3.5MW and an energy storage capacity of 7.2MWh. ABS claims the pre-configured model means it can be installed on-site within six hours, compared to weeks or even months for more traditional energy storage systems.

According to the data sheet published by ABS, the working efficiency of the system is 88% to 91%, the efficiency of the lithium-ion battery is relatively low, and the DC voltage range is 1150 to 1560Vdc. While the datasheet doesn't indicate what type of lithium battery is used, the company's website claims to use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

ABS announced its entry into the energy storage market in 2018 with the acquisition of Robert Bosch's battery system manufacturing and testing assets. This includes a 16,000-square-meter production facility in Springboro, Ohio, which has been assembling lithium-ion battery packs for the electric vehicle industry since 2009.

ABS restarted the battery production facility at the plant in April 2022 and increased production capacity, primarily for the ALLIANCE smart battery series for the light commercial and heavy electric vehicle markets. It also has an innovation center in Michigan with 175 employees.

B: Jupiter Power deploys 110MW/220MWh battery energy storage project in the United States

Gravity energy storage developer Energy Vault plans to supply and optimize battery storage systems with a total storage capacity of 220MWh for energy developer Jupiter Power, which will be deployed in Texas and California.

Energy Vault, which primarily develops new gravity energy storage technologies, now offers conventional battery energy storage systems in addition to its gravity energy storage systems. The company listed the scale of project development for each division in its recent earnings report, which projected total revenue of nearly $700 million by 2023.

According to a press release, the company will supply a 100MW/200MWh battery storage system for Jupiter Power’s battery storage project near Fort Stockton, Texas, which will provide grid operator Texas The State Electric Reliability Commission (ERCOT) provides energy and ancillary services.

Notably, the Electric Reliability Commission of Texas (ERCOT) market does not have a centralized capacity auction, so electricity can be sold to buyers in that market.

Energy Vault, which went public earlier this year, will also build and commission a smaller 10MW/20MWh battery storage system for Carpinteria, California-based Jupiter Power.

The company launched its energy management software (EMS) in November 2021, according to industry media reports at the time. The unit developing the software is led by John Jung, former CEO and president of Greensmith Energy, a pioneer in the battery energy storage systems and energy management software industry.

And Jupiter Power has 654MWh of battery storage projects in operation or in the commissioning phase in the Electric Reliability Commission of Texas (ERCOT) market.

C: The 230MW battery energy storage system deployed by NextEra Energy in California is put into operation

A 230MW battery energy storage system (BESS), deployed by NextEra Energy in California, opened today as part of a large-scale solar-plus-storage project.

The solar-plus-storage project was deployed on 94 acres in Riverside County, California, and the California Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which manages the land, announced on August 16 that the name Desert Sunlight battery energy storage system began Commercial Operation.

(Overview of Desert Sunlight solar + energy storage project)

The 230MW of battery storage will be paired with the existing operating Desert Sunlight solar farm, which will store the renewable energy generated by the farm and then release the power during peak periods.

The company's project developer is Sunlight Storage, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources, the California Bureau of Land Management said in a November approval document for the project.

NextEra Energy's filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission calls the project the Sunlight Storage Facility, which is 230MW/920MWh in size. The four-hour duration of battery storage is a requirement by the state's electricity regulator for utilities to deploy energy storage projects in California, the primary framework for grid operator California Independent System Operator (CAISO) to ensure supply meets demand, It is also the main source of income for battery energy storage projects.

Official data shows that as of the end of July, the California Independent System Operator (CAISO) had 3,334MW of grid-scale battery storage systems in commercial operation.

It's unclear if these figures include the Desert Sunligh battery storage system, which would bring the installed capacity of battery storage systems deployed and operating in California close to 3.6GW. As industry media reported, if Ameresco's 537.5MW/2,150MWh battery storage project had not been delayed, the number could have exceeded 4GW by now, in line with the grid operator's stated goals.

The California Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the government agency responsible for the management of federal lands in the United States, is a key agency in approving projects within its portfolio. Most recently, the agency's recent approvals of large-scale solar-plus-storage projects include a 250MW project by Revolve Renewable Power and a 500MW project by Oberon Solar.

The agency also encourages energy developers to build projects on lands it manages, and recently issued calls for proposals to build solar power projects on 90,000 acres of public lands in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico.
