150MW/300MWh! Three Edify Energy projects to use Tesla's Megapacks energy storage system

Tesla will provide 150MW/300MW energy storage systems for battery storage projects developed by Australian renewable energy developer Edify Energy.

Edify Energy said the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) agreement with Tesla Inc Australia covers three independently deployed lithium-ion battery energy storage projects that will be connected to Darling, NSW A substation in Cape Town.

The three battery storage projects in the portfolio are the 60MW/120MWh Riverina 1 battery storage system, the 65MW/130MWh Riverina 2 battery storage system and the 25MW/50MWh Darlington Point battery storage system.

Last May, Shell Energy, the utilities arm of oil and gas giant Shell, signed a long-term service agreement to operate the Riverina 1 battery storage system. As industry media reported at the time, it would be used in Shell's long-term retail contract with the NSW government.

The 25MW/50MWh battery storage project paired with the Gannawarra solar farm uses the Tesla Powerpack battery storage system, the predecessor of the Tesla Megapack – it is still available as a commercial and industrial (C&I) or small utility storage product, but since 2019 Since its launch, it has been replaced by Tesla Megapack battery energy storage to build a large-scale battery storage project. Each Tesla Megapack battery energy storage system has a maximum capacity of 3MWh.

To date, Tesla has provided battery energy storage systems for some large-scale battery energy storage projects in Australia, including the Hornsdale battery energy storage project (150MW/193.5MWh) and the recently operated Victorian Big Battery battery storage system. Energy system (300MW/450MWh), both battery projects are deployed by local energy developer Neoen. The Megapacks battery storage system will also be used for Genex Power's 100MWh Bouldercombe battery storage project in Queensland, which has closed financially in the past few weeks.

The 300MWh battery storage system deployed at Cape Darlington will enter Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM), which serves most of the east coast. Australia's National Electricity Market (NEM) already provides ancillary services and arbitrage revenue opportunities for battery storage systems on a commercial basis, and is rapidly being developed to accommodate greener, more efficient grid assets such as batteries and inverter-based of renewable energy.

John Cole, CEO of Edify Energy, said: "The advantages of large-scale battery storage systems in our growing renewable energy sector are well-documented and supported. Given their fast, accurate response and technical capabilities, energy storage systems are rapidly growing A valuable capacity solution for Australia’s national electricity market. The pace of progress in this growing technology sector is exciting and thereby breaking down barriers that are difficult for market and network players to embrace.”

The adoption of smart inverters in the Darlington Point substation battery energy storage project means that the battery energy storage system will also be able to support the operation of the local grid with a stable service traditionally provided by thermal power plants, and provide synchronous inertia.

"There is no doubt that as our understanding of advanced inverters grows, we will see more smart technologies replacing fossil fuel power plants and accelerating Australia's transition to a clean energy future," Cole said.

Of course, the advancement of these projects will take a certain amount of time. SES Power will wait and see how the fluctuation of lithium battery raw materials will affect these projects and new plans. Although Tesla is a very successful and huge company with very strong cost control capabilities, they do not have lithium mines! So that Tesla's electric cars are raising their prices. SES Power has a deep precipitation in energy storage products, but the increase in raw material prices has indeed affected many of our projects. Our partners, EVE, CATL, and BYD, have also raised the price of square aluminum-shell lithium iron phosphate batteries (single 100Ah-280Ah)) price of the product.
