  Powin Energy signs 5.8GWh battery storage agreement with four developers

  On February 10, Oregon-based Powin Energy signed a framework agreement with four developers to deliver 5.8GWh of battery energy storage solutions between 2022 and 2024. These systems will be used in multiple projects in the United States and Taiwan.

  Powin is responsible for sourcing batteries and other key components and assembling them into battery energy storage system (BESS) solutions. These solutions will provide complete integrated systems to unnamed developers. These solutions include batteries, battery management systems, battery packs, enclosures, cables, transformers, inverters, and software and control system architectures.

  Through its own factories and manufacturing partners in China and Taiwan, Powin Energy has built its own systems in many places. In 2020, the company decided to increase the production capacity of its Taiwan factory from 700MWh to 2.5GWh.

  Earlier this year, to get closer to the company's key customer base, Powin announced a large-scale capacity-building "near-shore" deal. Powin will partner with design, manufacturing and supply chain specialist Celestica to manufacture Powin's equipment in Monterrey, Mexico.

  The company claims that most of the 5.8GWh supply announced on February 10 will be produced there, all using Powin's recently launched Centipede hardware platform. Centipede can easily combine multiple Stack750E BESS units from Powin, which can install up to 200MWh of equipment on an acre. Before the latest agreement was signed, Powin had received over 2GWh of orders for Centipede, equivalent to the total number of systems developed so far in Powin's history. Powin signed a total of 5GWh of contracts.

  If the new framework agreement can be solidified into a stable order, Powin will be responsible for debugging the system and providing long-term services from operation and maintenance to 20-year extended warranty support.

  Geoff Brown, CEO of Powin, said: "Powin has made significant progress over the past 12 months and these agreements signify the high level of trust we have established in the energy storage industry. These agreements are in partnership with some of the industry's most respected Developers signed up, and their projects are doing well. These projects are located near some of the largest power hubs in the western and northeastern U.S. and Asia."

  Powin sources most of its lithium iron phosphate batteries from China, including two large master supply agreements with CATL and EVE. However, the company said it would like to see more dispersed capacity closer to customer demand, especially in the United States.
