Toshiba launches 20Ah-HP rechargeable lithium-ion battery for lead-acid replacement and starter batteries

In 2005, SES Power used Toshiba's 18650 lithium battery for the production of customized lithium-ion battery packs. However, in the past ten years, Toshiba has not invested enough resources in lithium-ion batteries, which has caused it to be gradually abandoned by CATL, BYD, Panasonic, Samsung, LG, etc. in this industry.

　　On January 12, Japan's Toshiba Corporation expanded its SCiB product range with the launch of a 20Ah-HP rechargeable lithium-ion battery that provides both high energy and high power.

　　The market generally needs rechargeable lithium-ion batteries that can provide high energy and high power at the same time, but so far it is still not possible to have both. For example, in electric vehicles, high-energy batteries can greatly improve the electric vehicle's range, but reduce power input and output, and increase charging time. Drawing on its expertise in high-energy and high-power products, Toshiba has developed a new type of battery that balances both performances.

　　The new battery is suitable for heavy-duty applications that require high power input and output, and where the battery must contain heat and operate continuously, such as fast charging of commercial vehicles, regenerative power systems for rolling stock, and industrial equipment.

　　The battery is the same size as Toshiba's current 20Ah product, allowing existing customers to easily upgrade to improved input and output power using the same module set. Currently, the battery is available to order worldwide.

　　Compared with Toshiba's current 20Ah battery, the new 20Ah-HP battery reduces the battery resistance by about 40% and can provide 1.7 times higher input and 1.6 times higher output, so it can effectively suppress heat generation when large current is applied, so that it is possible to design more Simple cooling system. For example, depending on the customer system, water cooling can be simplified to forced air cooling, or forced air cooling can be simplified to free cooling. Lowering the resistance also reduces overvoltage, allowing the battery to operate over a wider state-of-charge (SOC) range.

　　Due to its lower resistance, the new 20Ah-HP battery suppresses heat during continuous charge and discharge, resulting in a longer lifespan than existing 20Ah batteries. Under the test conditions shown in the figure below, the cell can maintain nearly 100% capacity after 8,000 charge-discharge cycles, while the capacity of the existing 20Ah battery has dropped by about 10%.

　　The new 20Ah-HP battery has improved input and output power, but is the same size as the existing 20Ah battery, enabling existing customers to easily upgrade to improved performance using the same module set.

　　Toshiba expects the new battery to be deployed in automobiles, industrial equipment and storage battery systems such as drive power and emergency power for railways, port cranes, electric ferries, hybrid buses, trucks, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and plug-in Regenerative power sources for hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), replacements for lead-acid batteries and battery systems.
