  UK's TagEnergy buys 100% of 99.9MW BESS project for £65 million

  UK clean energy developer TagEnergy has said it has acquired 100% of the 99.9MW installed capacity Lakeside Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), the company's fifth investment in the UK this year.

  The company acquired the battery storage system from UK energy developer RES for nearly £65 million, and TagEnergy also acquired the 50MW Roaring Hill battery storage project from RES in October this year.

  TagEnergy said construction of the Lakeside battery storage system in Drax, North Yorkshire, will begin in the fourth quarter of 2022 and is scheduled to be up and running in October 2023. The storage system provides an efficient connection to the grid and can reduce grid costs.

  Pivot Power, Wärtsilä and Habitat Energy claimed in June this year to have the UK's first grid-scale battery storage system directly connected to the transmission network, with a 50MW lithium-ion battery storage system being deployed as part of the Oxford Energy Super Energy Hub project, and another grid-connected Pivot Power 50MW/100MWh Sandwell battery storage system. In addition, a similarly sized battery storage system will begin construction in Coventry in early 2022.

  TagEnergy's acquisition of the Lakeside battery storage system brings its UK energy storage portfolio to 270MW/540MWh, and the company also acquired a 60% interest in two 50MW battery storage projects this year, one near Luton, England, and the other one near Abernethy, Scotland.

  Meanwhile, construction of TagEnergy and Tesla's Hawkes Hill Energy Park battery storage project in Dorset, England, began in September of this year.
