Neoen to build 100MW/200MWh battery storage project in Australia

French renewable energy developer Neoen has said that it has started construction of a 100MW/200MWh battery storage project in the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). The company has previously notified its construction partners of the start of construction.

Neoen, who owns and operates the renewable energy generation facilities and energy storage assets it develops, was awarded an ownership and construction contract by the ACT government.

The ACT government selected Neoen through a competitive tender in its fifth renewable energy reverse auction in September last year. The government noted that the price of the tender was significantly lower than the previous auction price.

According to reports at the time, Neoen was awarded the contract to deploy the battery storage project and build a 14-year 100 MW wind farm in its Goyder Renewables Zone project. This is Neoen's fourth winning bid in the ACT in the renewable energy auction.

Neoen said that since its initial commitment to build the 50MW battery storage project, the electricity market has seen a surge in demand for services from battery storage systems, leading to a doubling of the size of the project, which is called Capital Battery.

We are pleased to see the deployment of this battery storage system begin in the ACT, and increasing the installed battery capacity to 100MW is a significant commitment to demonstrate the power market's confidence in operating battery storage systems," said Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction. And the important role it will play in modernizing and stabilizing the grid."

The Capital Battery battery storage project will be built on a site adjacent to transmission operator TransGrid's Queanbeyan substation.

The Capital Battery battery storage project is expected to be online by mid-2023, supporting the ACT Government's goal of moving towards carbon neutrality by 2045, with Minister Rattenbury stating that the region has already achieved its target of 100% renewable energy adoption by 2020. This has been achieved primarily through solar and wind power, including a number of renewable energy generation facilities deployed by Neoen.

He said, "Renewable energy plays a vital role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the ACT. It has also made Canberra an Australian center of excellence for renewable energy and has increased the level of investment in renewable energy."

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become the primary energy storage solution for life in modern society. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are perfect replacements for lead-acid batteries and are more preferred by industries such as grid-connected peaking, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic storage, UPS and data centers.

Solar power system with lithium battery energy storage system is a very promising clean energy.
