  Kokam will deploy a 15MW/10.4MWh battery energy storage project in Tahiti

  Kokam, a subsidiary of American renewable energy developer SolarEdge, said recently that it plans to deploy a 15MW/10.4MWh battery energy storage system on the French island of Tahiti in the center of the Pacific Ocean, which will help the island save hundreds of dollars by replacing diesel generators. Ten thousand dollars in fuel costs and help promote the use of 75% renewable energy by 2030.

  The battery energy storage system will be provided by Kokam and will be integrated with the virtual synchronous generator (VSG) system developed by Siemens.

  The energy storage system will begin operation later next year and will replace some of the diesel generators in Tahiti. It is estimated that after the project is put into operation, it can save 2.2 million US dollars in diesel cost every year.

  The battery energy storage system deployed in Tahiti operates similarly to another very successful battery energy storage system from Kokam. This is a 35MW/12MWh battery energy storage system operated by Alinta in Newman Hill, Western Australia, where it eliminates the need for backup natural gas power generation facilities, which not only saves operating costs and reduces carbon emissions, but also improves reliability sex.

  Only 36% of Tahiti’s electricity supply currently comes from renewable energy sources—about 30% comes from hydroelectric power stations and 6% comes from solar power facilities. Other parts rely on diesel to generate electricity, which not only pollutes the environment but also is costly.

  Jeff Connolly, Chairman and CEO of Siemens Australia Pacific, said in a statement, “Tahiti will benefit a lot from this innovative and sustainable technological solution. Battery energy storage systems are economically feasible. It is continuous and can save a lot of money. And it is good for environmental protection because it reduces the demand for diesel. The energy storage system provides support for the stability of electricity because they use more renewable energy. This It is a good example of how energy storage technology can create a sustainable future. It provides more opportunities for remote areas such as islands and mining areas to adopt clean energy, otherwise the energy supply in these areas will be heavily dependent on diesel."
