QCELLS recently stated that it has acquired a utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) that is being developed in Texas. This is the company's first independently deployed battery energy storage project.
This 190MW/380MWh energy storage system facility is located in Texas and is one of the largest independently deployed battery energy storage projects in the state to date. Like most large-scale battery energy storage systems in the United States, this battery energy storage project called Sputnik Energy Storage will operate in the Texas Electric Reliability Council (ERCOT) market.
Q CELLS purchased the project from Belltown Power (headquartered in Texas), a developer of solar and energy storage. Belltown said it has sold 14 energy storage projects with a total installed capacity of more than 2.5GW, most of which are located in the regional market of the Texas Electric Reliability Commission (ERCOT) or PJM interconnection.
Belltown entered the independently deployed battery energy storage market in April 2021. The company said at the time that it had set the goal of developing a 1GW battery energy storage system and would go online within three years. The financial terms of the Sputnik battery energy storage project transaction were not disclosed. The Sputnik battery energy storage project is currently being deployed in Hunter County, will be put into use in 2022, and will be connected to the power grid in Rayburn County.
Q CELLS is well-known internationally as a solar cell and module manufacturer. It also develops, invests and delivers solar power generation facilities and energy storage projects through its engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) business in the United States.
Q CELLS has provided solutions for 332MW of solar power assets and has more than 9GW of solar and energy storage project development plans. In Europe, Q CELLS manufactures and sells residential and commercial energy storage systems, as well as total home solutions that combine solar energy, energy storage, and other technologies. The company claims that it can make its residential customers' electricity come entirely from renewable energy sources.
In August of this year, Q CELLS invested in the solar + energy storage project portfolio developed by Amped Solutions through the so-called "grid equity investment". In exchange for equity investment, Q CELLS will receive grid service income from California's community and industrial and commercial (C&I) projects. Amped Solutions will own and operate these projects and derive other income from them.
Q CELLS’s parent company, Hanwha Group, has another subsidiary, 174 Global. 174 Global is also developing large-scale battery energy storage projects in the United States, including a 100MW/400MWh battery energy storage project at the site of an abandoned fossil fuel power plant in New York.
At the same time, other recent projects in Texas include two 100MW/100MWh independently deployed battery energy storage projects commissioned by Independent Power Producer (IPP) Broad Reach Power a few weeks ago, and National Grid Renewables The company and its partners are building a solar energy + energy storage project, in which the installed capacity of solar power generation facilities is 275MW, and the installed capacity of battery energy storage project is 125MW.
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate battery is a perfect replacement for lead-acid batteries, and it is the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.
Solar power generation system with lithium battery energy storage system is a very promising clean energy.
