  The team of Wang Chaoyang, an academician of the American Academy of Sciences, has invented an all-climate battery. The related article was published in the journal Nature, which mainly solved the problem of the low temperature resistance of lithium batteries.

  The results published in this magazine show that the above team implanted a piece of nickel foil with a thickness of 10 microns inside the battery as a heating element. Using the battery's own energy, plus a switch, you can adjust the battery's activity at will. The result of this adjustment is that even if the battery is frozen through in an environment of minus 30 degrees Celsius, it only takes 30 seconds to self-heat to above zero and work normally.

  Lithium batteries are very afraid of low temperatures, and electric vehicles will have shorter cruising range in winter and it will be difficult to charge. To this end, automotive engineers need to add a thermal management system to the battery, but this will increase the weight, volume and cost of the battery. What Wang Chaoyang's team is looking for is a battery with a controllable interface, which can turn off a part of the interface when it is not working to improve safety. When working, increase the interface to provide high power output. After years of exploration, they invented an all-climate battery.

  The battery is composed of three materials: the positive and negative materials and the electrolyte between the two. This structure forms two interfaces, one is located between the positive electrode material and the electrolyte, and the other is located between the negative electrode material and the electrolyte. There is a potential difference between the two interfaces, which generates a voltage. Wang Chaoyang said, “Regardless of whether we are using batteries or not, the reaction interface in the battery has been working diligently and actively.” This is the root cause of battery aging and potential safety hazards.

  The Wang Chaoyang team has conducted relevant tests in severe cold areas for three consecutive years, fully verifying the performance and life of this all-weather battery.

  There is no big problem with this technology, and the final key step is mass production. The current mass production of all-climate batteries may cost a lot of money, but manufacturers are still quite willing to promote the application of this new battery. After all, the most affluent regions in the world have low suitable temperatures in winter.
