Why is the life of lead-acid batteries getting shorter and shorter?
Although lead-acid batteries are compared with lithium batteries in terms of life, energy-to-volume ratio, and environmental protection, especially the lithium iron phosphate battery that can perfectly replace it, there is indeed a big gap in performance, so it is gradually replaced by lithium batteries. However, the replacement of any product will have a long process, and lead-acid batteries still dominate in some application fields.
Many users of lead-acid batteries report that the quality of current lead-acid batteries is not as good as before, especially in winter, they are even closer to being unusable. Now batteries are generally not as good as before. Why?
1. Cadmium withdrew from the lead-acid battery industry
The role of cadmium in lead-acid batteries is to extend battery life and prevent grid cracks. Cadmium plays a key role in battery durability. However, cadmium has certain toxicity. Long-term inhalation of cadmium can cause chronic poisoning, cause kidney damage, and cause great harm to human body. At the same time, it has a great impact on the environment. Therefore, many governments have explicitly stipulated that the addition of cadmium in lead-acid batteries is prohibited. Hazard.
2. Changes in the manufacturing process of lead-acid batteries
Previously, lead-acid batteries were mainly produced by external chemical conversion technology. Starting in 2011, lead-acid battery companies have begun to switch to internal chemical conversion technology in accordance with the corresponding government policy requirements.
The internalized battery actually has better performance than the externalized battery. The externalized battery is completely formed, so the capacity basically does not increase during cycling, and it quickly enters a state of attenuation. As the cycle progresses, the internalized battery activates the active material continuously. During the cycle, the capacity can continue to increase, so the battery has a longer service life.
This change is a good thing, but why did it produce the opposite result in practical applications?
The reason is with the charger! The internalized battery has higher requirements for charging than the externalized battery. If the charger is difficult to meet the charging voltage and current requirements, then with each unqualified charge, it will produce many undesirable chemical side effects. It will not be long before the battery is used. There will be more and more internal impurities, and ultimately the life of the battery will be severely shortened.
Many of the current chargers on the market are unable to meet the charging needs of the battery. In addition, many consumers do not have the common sense of maintaining the battery. As a result, the internalization of the battery is generally poor in quality and has become the norm in the current market.
3. The battery plate becomes thinner
This is a consideration of cost.
4. Irregular user usage
For any battery, whether it is a lead-acid battery, a nickel-metal hydride battery or a lithium battery, it is recommended that customers read the instructions carefully and use them in strict accordance with the instructions.
5. The battery does not match the working equipment
This is also a common problem. The battery is often overloaded, the floating charge is not controlled for a long time, the device has no minimum voltage protection, and so on.
Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect substitute for lead-acid batteries, and are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.
