As the epidemic is gradually brought under control, an unprecedented energy crisis has come unexpectedly during the critical period when the Indian economy is beginning to recover.

At present, the major thermal power plants in India are already facing the dilemma of no coal available. Of the country’s 135 coal-fired power plants, 112 have less than a week's worth of inventory, more than 70 have less than three days, and 16 have even run out of supply.

Indian Electricity Minister Singh said: "I don't know whether the situation will ease in the next 5 to 6 months. Although demand usually slows as the weather turns cold in mid-October, the situation will be very unstable."

According to statistics, India's national electricity demand has increased by 10% and 18% in July and August, and the demand has increased by 13.2% in the first eight months of this year. From July to September of previous years, the Indian coal industry was usually affected by monsoons and other factors, and there would be periodic production cuts. However, this year, the coal shortage has exceeded expectations.

After the surge in electricity demand and the sharp drop in local coal production eroded inventories, the current coal inventory in thermal power stations across India has fallen to 8.409 million tons, the lowest point since November 2017.

Only by importing coal at a high price can the risk of power outages faced by various states be avoided. However, coal has now become a scarce commodity in the international market. The FOB prices of Australian coal, Indonesian coal and South African coal continue to expand year-on-year, rising by 171%, 255% and 189% respectively.

The continuous increase in seaborne prices and international coal prices are the main reasons for the sluggish coal imports in India. As long as international coal prices remain high, India's coal imports will continue to be sluggish, and India's domestic coal supply is also one of the important reasons.

India is the third largest electricity producer and consumer in the world after China and the United States. According to statistics, the total installed capacity of India's National Grid is 388.134GW, and renewable energy power plants, including large-scale hydroelectric power generation, account for 37% of India's total installed capacity. Last year, India’s annual total power generation amounted to 7779.1TWh, which accounted for 5.8% of the world's total power generation, close to the total of Japan and South Korea.

However, compared with other countries, India's industrial system is particularly sensitive to coal power, and the power system is extremely dependent on coal. India’s thermal power generation accounts for 82% of the total power generation, most of which are coal-fired power units, hydropower accounts for 9.06%, and solar and wind power accounts for only 6.44%.

In fact, India's domestic metal manufacturing companies have clearly felt the impact of insufficient coal. Under normal circumstances, due to the large amount of thermal coal used in the metal manufacturing process, companies generally maintain a thermal coal inventory for 12-15 days, but currently most companies have dropped to 3-4 days.

It's not just India. Because of the sharp rebound in demand after the epidemic, all parts of the world are worried about the shortage of energy supply. The prices of commodities such as coal, natural gas, and oil have risen to multi-year highs. Winter in the northern hemisphere is approaching, and energy consumption may rise to a new high, which will make the shortage of energy supply more serious, and it is very likely to raise global energy prices again.

At present, countries in the world have just begun the green energy transition, but at the same time, the imminent energy crisis has forced more and more countries to use coal, which is very different from the previous promise of green development. What's more, in the coming months, even the use of coal will not alleviate the current situation of tight energy supply.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect substitute for lead-acid batteries, and are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.

Solar power generation system with lithium battery energy storage system is a very promising clean energy.
