Arizona SRP Company Opens and Operates 25MW/100MWh Battery Energy Storage Project

According to reports, the Arizona utility company Salt River Project (SRP) recently stated that it has connected to the grid to operate a 25MW/100MWh battery energy storage project.

SRP said that the energy storage project deployed at the Bolster substation is currently the largest independently deployed battery energy storage system (BESS) in the southwestern United States. The project is located near the company's Agua Fria thermal power plant with an installed capacity of 626MW in Peoria.

SRP said that the project uses the Tesla Megapack battery energy storage system, which can be charged during off-peak periods when electricity is cheaper and more sufficient, and then discharged during peak power demand to meet customer needs.

Kelly Barr, Chief Strategy, Corporate Services and Sustainability Executive Officer of SRP said: "Battery storage is an extremely important and growing component of SRP's 2035 sustainability goals, which can reduce our carbon emissions. The battery energy storage system operating at the Bolster substation allows us to provide electricity when our customers need it most and can offset carbon emissions."

SRP mainly provides power services to approximately 1 million customers in the Phoenix area. In May of this year, it set a goal to increase the installed capacity of solar power generation by 2025MW by 2025. The proposal was criticized.

The company also has two running battery energy storage system pilot projects and collects operating data from them. One is a solar + energy storage project with an installed capacity of 20MW, and the other is a 10MW/40MWh independent deployment of electric energy storage systems.

In addition to owning these projects and deploying energy storage projects at the Bolster substation in Peoria, SRP has also signed a long-term power purchase agreement for two large-scale battery energy storage projects under construction: one is the Sonoran Energy Center, which will deploy A 250MW solar power generation facility and 1GWh battery energy storage system; the other is Storey Energy Center, which is an 88MW solar + energy storage project. These two projects are expected to be put into operation in June 2023.

Lithium-ion battery (LIB) has become the main energy storage solution in modern social life. Among them, lithium iron phosphate batteries are a perfect substitute for lead-acid batteries, and are the first choice for grid-connected peak shaving, off-grid energy storage, photovoltaic energy storage, UPS, data center and other industries.

Wind energy, solar energy, etc., combined with lithium battery energy storage systems, are very promising clean energy sources.
