Tesla will invest in building the world's largest battery factory. How will the production capacity be consumed?

On September 6, according to the German "Daily Mirror" report, Tesla will receive 1.14 billion euros from the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWI) for the construction of a new Tesla Gigafactory near its Berlin Gigafactory. Battery factory. Peter Altmaier, the head of BMWI, said that if the product can be produced smoothly, the plant will be able to provide more than 2,000 jobs.

It is reported that the subsidy fund comes from the "European Battery Innovation Project" approved by the European Union at the beginning of this year. The project involves a total of 2.9 billion euros and includes more than 40 companies. In addition to Tesla, it also includes BMW and other car companies.

According to German media reports, Tesla’s subsidy agreement has been reached and is currently awaiting approval. It is expected to be announced in the fourth quarter of this year. This means that one-third of the funds currently available for innovative battery projects will flow to Tesla.

So how much money does Tesla plan to invest in this battery factory?

According to reports, Tesla's total investment in the battery factory in Germany is about 5 billion euros. After the plant is completed, it may become the world's largest battery plant with an annual production capacity of 100GWh.

What is certain is that the Berlin Super Factory will assemble and produce Model Y. After the factory is completed and put into full production, it is expected to produce 500,000 cars per year. And because the battery factory is supporting the Berlin Super Factory, it means that part of the battery capacity will be used for Model Y, and more importantly, maybe soon, Tesla's cars will be equipped with self-produced batteries.

In addition, it has recently been reported that Tesla's battery factory in Nevada plans to open its 14th production line this year, and its production capacity is expected to increase by about 10%. Moreover, in the earnings call in the first quarter of this year, Tesla said, “We will not replace battery suppliers, but will supplement suppliers”, “We hope to double the battery production capacity this year or next year.”

With such a huge battery capacity plan, it is unlikely that all cars will be consumed. How will Tesla solve it?

Among them, the Shanghai super factory will have a production capacity of 450,000 vehicles this year, and the Berlin and Texas super factories will each have a planned production capacity of 500,000 vehicles, which will officially start production this year and next. The Fremont factory has a planned production capacity of 590,000 vehicles. The four major automobile assembly plants have a combined annual production capacity of 2.04 million vehicles, and Tesla is still selecting sites to build plants around the world. As a result, the consumption of power batteries is considerable.

In addition to automobiles, the energy storage business can consume Tesla's batteries on a large scale.

In 2019, Tesla and Pacific Gas and Electric Corporation reached a cooperation to deploy several giant battery energy storage devices called Megapack in the Moss Landing community in the Monterey Bay area of California, USA.

This year, the "Victorian Big Battery" project jointly created by Tesla and French renewable energy company Neoen was officially registered. The project is also equipped with the Megapack energy storage system, which is a 13-ton lithium battery.

In addition, on July 20th, Tesla's US official website officially launched the Megapack industrial-grade battery energy storage system, priced at 1 million US dollars, and Tesla said that Megapack's production capacity by the end of 2022 has been sold out. It is understood that a Megapack is a large 3 MW battery system with an output power of 761.9 kW.

It is important to point out that at the end of 2019, overseas media exposed Tesla's official mobile energy storage charging vehicle, which has the ability to provide fast charging for 8 Tesla models at the same time. The energy storage device on the charging car is the energy storage battery Megapack. This also means that Tesla's Megapack may also be used in the automotive "energy storage" market.
