Worldwide electricity companies are expanding their solar power plants
In order to reduce the cost of electricity, power companies around the world are expanding their solar power plants.
Near Aswan in southern Egypt, the US$4 billion Benban solar power plant will cover an area 10 times larger than New York’s Central Park and generate 180 million watts of electricity.
This is almost twice the current planned capacity of the Villanueva nuclear power plant in Coahuila, Mexico.
Benjamin Attia, a solar analyst at Wood Mackenzie, a Scottish energy consultancy, said: "We will start to see more solar power projects of 1 to 2 gigawatts, and may even reach tens of gigawatts in the future."
The plunge in the price of solar panels is one of the main reasons for the rapid development of solar power projects. Even if the US government imposes punitive tariffs on Chinese solar panels, it is unlikely to slow the development of solar power projects. This is because the cost of large-scale solar power generation is already lower and cleaner than coal.
"The government becomes sober," Attia said. "They just want to use the cheapest and fastest way to add new power supply. For nuclear power, it may take 10 years; For natural gas, it is estimated to be 4 years. If you want to talk about solar energy, it is much simpler, you can complete a fairly large project in 18 months."
For developing countries, solar power is a particularly attractive option. When solar panels were expensive, only rich countries could afford subsidies and tax breaks. But now in many sunny regions of the world, without financial assistance (the same is true in parts of the United States and other developed countries), solar power generation is more competitive than other energy sources.
